That seems like a nice flavourful mix but it wouldn’t have the funky fish thing happening that real fish sauce has (honestly, it smells pretty funky – tastes great though). If anything, I might add a few dashes of a vegetarian worcestershire sauce to that. The tamarind in worcestershire might give it a bit more depth (or perhaps just add some tamarind concentrate).
I found a vegan fish sauce recipe online and made it.
3/4 cup soy sauce
1 garlic clove, crushed (optional)
1/2 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 cup water
I’ve never cooked with fish sauce, so I’m not sure if it had the flavor it should have.
Do you have any thoughts on the recipe?
Wonderful! Yeah, I’ve been known to do a tofu version as well. I didn’t realize there was a vegan fish sauce! That’s great because it really is an essential flavour in Thai cuisine.

I made this last night, vegetarian style. Tofu and vegan fish sauce replaced the shrimp.
I loved it and you are right, it gets better with every bite, nom nom!
thanks Mike
